Volunteering on Vacation

pexelsphoto1083619Volunteering is an amazing way to give back to local nonprofits that better communities. If you want to make volunteering a part of your Emerald Coast vacation, there are tons of opportunities with great charities. Listed below are some local charities with volunteer programs.

Emerald Coast Science Center
The Emerald Coast Science Center “strives to inspire and grow a scientifically engaged community.” The center displays over 45 exhibits with 8,000 square feet of indoor space and 2 acres of property including SMALLab Learning, live animals, robotics, and much more.  

Alaqua
Alaqua is a private, non-profit wildlife sanctuary located on a 10 acre farm. With their no-kill policy, they provide protection, shelter, and care to animals in need. They also have a full-service adoption center. They believe that “every abused, neglected and homeless animal deserves a second chance.”  

Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge
ECWR rehabilitates and releases orphaned and injured indigenous wildlife to Northwest Florida. They have outreach in five counties of Northwest Florida and partner with schools to educate the youth on the importance of conserving native species.

Opportunity Place
Opportunity Place is temporary emergency housing for women and families. Their mission is to “help women and families, who are homeless, become self-sufficient.” They work tirelessly to help those who were homeless with “a safe place to stay, a meal to eat, and a promise of better days ahead.”  

Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance
Local waterways are vital to the Emerald Coast’s economy and environmental and human impact are threatening them. Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance is a local non-profit committed to sustaining healthy waterways through monitoring, education, restoration, and research.
