Artificial Reefs to Explore on the Emerald Coast
Snorkeling is a great activity for any beach vacation. There are no natural reefs in the Emerald Coast area, however, we have a multitude of artificial reefs you can snorkel or dive at. Many reefs are located in South Walton thanks to the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA), a nonprofit committed to creating artificial reefs in the area. Below is information on the artificial reefs to explore in the area.
Miramar Beach contains a dolphin shaped reef, Grayton Beach State Park features a turtle shaped reed, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park has a seahorse shaped reef, and Inlet Beach includes a cobia-shaped reef.
In addition to these reefs, SWARA plans to create twelve additional dive reefs. Nine will be near the shore with fish/dive reefs located about ⅔ mile off the beach, ideal for snorkelers to reach on paddle boards or kayaks. The other three will be located 3-7 miles offshore, perfect for SCUBA divers.
Seven sculptures will be constructed in time for Summer of 2018, including:
= “Propeller in Motion” by Marek Anthony
= “Self Portrait” by Justin Gaffrey
= “The Grayt Pineapple” by Rachel Herring
= “JYC’s Dream” by Kevin Reilly in collaboration with students from South Walton Montessori School
= “SWARA Skull” by Vince Tatum
= “Concrete Rope Reef Spheres” by Evelyn Tickle
= “Anamorphous Octopus” by Allison Wickey.
Since there are various types of artificial reefs in the area, there is one for every type of snorkeler or diver. South Walton’s artificial reefs are the perfect activity to include in your vacation for any adventurous spirits!
